Citizens Property Insurance Non-Renewal: the key distinction
Citizens’ depopulation program moves selected policies to participating private-market insurers.
The Citizens depopulation packet explains whether the policyholder can choose to remain with Citizens.
Depopulation and non-renewal are not interchangeable
Check whether the packet discusses assumption by a private insurer, continuing eligibility, or a different reason for ending the policy. Record the dates shown in your own documents rather than using a deadline from a general article.
Gather the documents together
- The entire notice, including response forms and enclosures.
- Your declarations page and renewal information.
- Any private-market offer included in the packet.
- Inspection requests, repair records, and mortgage information.
Compare the proposed contract before deciding
Ask about differences in deductibles, settlement wording, endorsements, and outstanding requirements. Coordinate replacement arrangements with the agent before changing an existing policy. Citizens is mentioned here as the subject of the guide, not as a representation claim.
Identify which notice you received
A nonrenewal notice, depopulation packet and general policy update do not call for identical responses. Read the heading, affected policy and response date before choosing a next step. Bring all pages into the discussion, including instructions and attachments. The agent needs the actual notice to distinguish an action you may take from something the carrier has already communicated.
Use the packet’s own dates
Do not borrow a deadline from a friend’s letter or a search result. Citizens materials can explain choices for a particular policy, and a response window may differ from the policy expiration date. Ask which date applies to the action you are considering and how receipt should be confirmed. Starting a quote request does not extend either deadline.
Compare a proposed option on its own terms
If another policy is being considered, review limits, deductibles, endorsements and any outstanding inspection requirements. Confirm whether the proposal reflects current property details. A carrier name alone does not establish equivalent coverage, and this website does not imply an appointment with Citizens. Ask the agent what can be reviewed and what information is still needed before making a decision.
